Health and Safety policy
Elephant and Castle Removals Health and Safety Policy
Elephant and Castle Removals is committed to maintaining high standards of health and safety for our employees, customers, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our removal activities. This policy sets out our approach to identifying, managing and minimising risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transport and delivery of goods.
Policy Statement and Objectives
Our objective is to provide a safe and healthy working environment and to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health. We aim to achieve this by planning our work carefully, providing appropriate training and equipment, and encouraging a culture where health and safety is everyone’s responsibility.
Senior management is responsible for ensuring that suitable resources are made available to implement this policy and for reviewing its effectiveness on a regular basis. All employees and contractors are expected to cooperate fully with this policy and follow the procedures and safe systems of work put in place.
Legal Compliance and Responsibilities
Elephant and Castle Removals will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation, approved codes of practice and industry standards applicable to the removals and transport sector. We will monitor changes in regulations and update our procedures where necessary.
Managers and supervisors are responsible for day-to-day implementation of this policy, including briefing staff, monitoring working practices and addressing any breaches of safety procedures. Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care for their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions or omissions while carrying out removal services.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We undertake risk assessments for our activities, including packing, lifting and carrying items, operating vehicles, working in stairwells, at entrances and in loading areas. Significant findings from risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work and to inform staff training.
Before any removal or delivery, staff are expected to assess the working environment, noting hazards such as restricted access, uneven surfaces, traffic conditions, poor lighting or weather-related risks. Where necessary, work will be re-planned or equipment will be used to control risks to an acceptable level.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Lifting, carrying and moving furniture and other belongings present a significant risk of injury. We are committed to reducing manual handling risks by careful planning, staff training and using appropriate equipment such as trolleys, skates, lifting straps and protective coverings.
All employees receive manual handling training that covers safe lifting techniques, team lifting, use of equipment and recognition of loads or tasks that are beyond personal capability. Staff must never attempt to move any item they believe to be unsafe without additional assistance or equipment.
Vehicles, Driving and Transport Safety
Our vehicles are maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition, with regular inspections and servicing carried out by competent personnel. Drivers are required to conduct pre-use checks and report any defects immediately so that appropriate action can be taken.
Drivers must comply with road traffic laws, speed limits and parking rules while carrying out removal services. Loads are to be secured safely to prevent movement or damage during transit, and vehicles must not be overloaded or operated in conditions that are unsafe.
Work at Access Points and Public Areas
When loading or unloading at properties, depots or storage facilities, particular attention is paid to protecting members of the public, customers and other workers nearby. Where necessary, staff will use cones, signs or barriers to mark out loading zones and keep access routes clear.
Special care is taken in shared entrances, stairwells, corridors and pavements to minimise obstruction and trip hazards. Staff are instructed to communicate clearly with customers and others on site so that everyone is aware of any temporary risks created by the move.
Training, Information and Supervision
Elephant and Castle Removals provides health and safety induction for all new employees, as well as ongoing training relevant to their roles. This may include manual handling, safe use of equipment, vehicle safety, working in confined or busy environments and emergency procedures.
Supervisors and team leaders monitor working practices on site and intervene where unsafe behaviour or conditions are observed. Refresher training is delivered when needed and when risk assessments or procedures are updated.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be fully controlled by other means, personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety footwear, high-visibility clothing or back supports may be provided. Employees are required to use this equipment as instructed and to look after it properly, reporting any damage or loss immediately.
Accidents, Incidents and Near Misses
All accidents, incidents and near misses that occur during removal activities must be reported to management as soon as possible. Accurate records will be kept and investigated to identify causes and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
If a serious incident occurs, work may be stopped until it is safe to continue. Where applicable, incidents will be reported to the relevant authorities in line with legal requirements.
Health, Wellbeing and Fitness for Work
We recognise that the physical nature of removals work can place demands on staff. Employees are encouraged to report any health concerns or conditions that may affect their ability to work safely. No one should carry out tasks for which they are not medically fit or sufficiently trained.
Staff must not be under the influence of alcohol or drugs while at work. Any prescription or over-the-counter medication that could impair performance should be disclosed to management so that appropriate adjustments can be considered.
Consultation and Continuous Improvement
Elephant and Castle Removals values feedback from employees and customers on health and safety matters. Staff are encouraged to raise concerns, suggest improvements and participate in discussions about safe working practices.
This policy will be reviewed regularly and updated when necessary to reflect changes in legislation, industry best practice and the nature of our removals services. Our aim is to continually improve our health and safety performance for the benefit of everyone involved.
